Monday Memes

I thought today's Manic Monday was appropriate.

Manic Monday #161

Do you enjoy brain teasers or do you find them frustrating? I love brain teasers! I love all sorts of puzzles. It is so good to challenge yourself every day, especially when you are no longer in school. If you like puzzles, check out this one that was just emailed to me: The God-Oppenheimer-Einstein Dice Puzzle.

Do you have any unusual collections? I collect shot glasses and makeup. I don't think either of those are terribly unusual. I also have a rather large collection of Nerd Boys. Check out my prize nerd boy:

What do people notice about you within the first hour of meeting you (other than appearance)? Dang, other than appearance? I actually wrote out an answer before reading the whole question, because I wrote: I have funny colored hair! "That lady has blue hair, Momma." "I know, honey." "No, mom, I'm serious. She has blue hair!" This was a conversation between a classmate and her son. I think he is sad that it isn't blue anymore. People will notice one of two things about me: that I'm a nerd or that I'm makeup crazy. They will probably notice both.

What are some of your favorite movie soundtracks?

I'm going to disregard musicals here, because I really do love musicals. The first soundtracks to come to mind are the soundtracks to Empire Records, FM, American Graffiti. Seriously, you can't get any better than those.

What's in a name?

Meme

When most people I know say "meme" they mean an Internet meme. An internet meme is traditionally "a phrase used to describe a catchphrase or concept that spreads quickly from person to person via the Internet, much like an inside joke" more coloquially, lulz. Examples include Rickroll, Sup Dawg/Pimp My Ride and "I accidentally [insert noun here]." Memes spread like wildfire among nerds, and often I find the need for an encyclopedia when talking to a non-nerd.

Meme takes on a new meaning in the blogging world. Blogging memes are not just jokes and phrases. They are short word games, quizzes, or surveys. They are generally regarded as comment bait. The more comments one receives, the higher the chance of that "meme" spreading.

How to pronounce "meme." Well, since it is a word that is often seen written and not heard, there are many pronunciations that one might hear. One thing that irks me about many bloggers and YouTubers is the mispronunciation of the word "meme." I very commonly hear it pronounced mee-mee. In the words of Encyclopedia Dramatica:

"... a great deal of confusion has formed amongst the retarded masses of the internets. Very few people seem to know how it's properly pronounced, and idiots still argue (and probably always will) over how exactly one says the word meme. Some possibilities:

  • Meem (with a long e sound)
  • Mee Mee (two long e sounds)
  • Mām (long a sound, like the word maim)
  • May May (two long a sounds)
  • Mem (with a short e sound)
  • Meh Meh (two short e sounds)
  • And any additional combination of the above sounds

Naturally, only one of these can be correct. Of course, anybody with a handful of brain cells can come to the conclusion that all but one of them sound fucking retarded. If you still can't figure out how it's pronounced, get off your lazy ass and just fucking Google it, loser."

You should probably note that Encyclopedia Dramatica does not care if you think it is nice or not. But seriously, mee-mee? Okay, I will explain why this is wrong.

As defined by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene (1976), a meme is "a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. The word "meme" is a shortening of "mimeme", which is derived from the Greek word mimema, meaning "something imitated."

Biological evolution depends on the existence of a self-replacing unit of transmission -- the gene. In the case of cultural evolution, this self-replacing unit is a meme. Okay, now you can guess how it pronounced.

Psychological Androgyny

The term project for Developmental Psychology at Belmont Abbey College includes book reviews, an annotated bibliography, and website reviews. The first two are written, simply, in the traditional paper form. The website reviews are, aptly, done in website form. Developmental is always held in the spring, and the students enrolled this semester have all uploaded their websites today. None of the websites are terribly complicated. Like most people in the class, I created my website in Word. Some created theirs in Power Point (if they did, you may not be able to view it with Firefox).

The purpose of the website was to review 5 websites dealing with your topic; in my case, psychological androgyny. Other topics included Personality Disorders, Attachment, Decision Making, Self-Esteem, etc. It was also beneficial in learning how to do certain things with web pages. Likes how to make links and things like that. BTW, it's not done the same way you make links with HTML, as with blogger. (Um, but I think it is actually easier.)

All in all, I think it's an excellent project. It causes a lot of heartache** in students. I never understood that, because it's really fun.

My Website: Psychological Androgyny (I totally made an A)
Spring 2008 Websites (my class)
Spring 2009 Websites

**Part of the heartache comes from not understanding how the internet/computers work. AT ALL. For some people. It's not like it's a hard project.

STATS CAMP

Ohmigod ohmigod ohmigod. I'm so excited. Breath. Okay. I am such a nerd. Guess what? You'll never guess, so I'll tell you.

I am going... to....

STATS CAMP!

Images property of APA

For reals.

I'm super cereal.

Actually it's Advanced Statistical Training in Psychology. Only 12 people were accepted. WOW! I am that much more awesome. I really thought I wasn't going to get in. It is from July 11 - 19 at UMD. "During the week, we will explore t-tests, multiple regression, linear correlation, ANOVA, repeated measures designs, preparing for grad school, controversial issues in psychology, and more."

You're jealous, aren't you? You are. I can tell.

Google Rocks!!

I don't know about you, but I love Google. I first starting using some of Google's applications when Blogger purchased by Google and I needed to have a gmail user name. Now, I use multiple Google Applications everyday. Below are my top three (excluding blogger, o/c).

GMail: I've begun using G-mail for my email. I have the e-mail from my college e-mail address forwarded to G-mail. I can also email FROM my college email address, so it appears that I sent the email from my college email. Sometimes it just looks more professional. Also, some of my professors require that. I label all my messages (Psycholgy, Work Study, Wachovia, Tiffany, Leo, Dadders, etc) and archive them. I delete very little. The amount you are able to store is awesome. I am not even at 3%.

Google Reader: All the blogs I read, all the youtubers I keep up with, all the webcomics I read, everything goes here. It's super convienient. Instead of checking 25, 50, 100 sites to find out if they've been updated, I check one. So it isn't impossible to keep up with 100 different sites.

Google Docs: This is a MUST HAVE. I have heard college student bemoaning a loss of a paper because they failed to save, saved over something, or any different reason. That will not happen with Google Docs! Docs is especially useful if you don't have MS Office. Docs includes a word processor, a spread sheet, and a presentation (eg Power Point) application. It automatically saves every minute or so. Vey handy.

The picture below is a little blurry, but click on it to expand (it won't be blurry when expanded). It shows all the different Google applications

Twitterpated

Taken from Tiffasaurus! Verbatim actually. Except for the pic. I just like it. Plus, Twitter. Thx T.

Do you twitter? Since I started twittering, I have a lot of people following me that I've never met. Some of these are random and some are even spammers. But I'm holding out hope that maybe I have fans. (Ha-ha-ha.)

If you follow me on twitter, send me an @reply or a DM to let me know that you're one of my readers and not a total stranger. I'll totally follow you back. ^_^

Friday Fill-Ins #2

And...here we go!

1. Why do we have to have money? Money is stupid. I say this mostly because I have a lot of bills right now.

2. Wearing a modicum of makeup and blow drying my hair in the A.M. are now habits. (My makeup blog)

3. I have to finish a presentation on "The Mental Traits of Sex" by Thompson by next Friday.

4. I had never heard the phrase "i accidentally a whole coke" and so I did not learn of then dangers of when you accidentally a whole coke, until I accidentally a whole coke, too.

5. I slept in this morning, again, the way I always do.

6. How was I to know that you wanted the last of the ice cream? I eated it. I am sorry. :-(

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to sleeping, I've been so tired this week; tomorrow my plans include studying and Sunday, I want to watch a movie or something! I'm going to have a boring weekend.

Online games for good

I love online games and I'm pretty sure that Stargirl does to. We also love to be smartypants. Stargirl is quite the nerd...and I mean that in the most loving way. What's one way to combine a love of addicting online games and a thirst for knowledge? Online trivia!

When you one-up online trivia by doing good for people around the world, you get the following games that, by getting questions right, you donate water or food to people who need it.

10 grains of rice of rice, a spoonful of flour, or a cup of water might not seem like a lot. Wait until the addiction kicks in, however, and that 10 grains of rice really adds up. So do the 10 grains of every other person around the world playing.

This was the first do-good online trivia game I was introduced to. This game tests your vocabulary (you can choose other subjects, but that's how it starts) and for every right answer you get, 10 grains of rice will be donated through the UN World Food program to help end hunger.

Health care trivia! Three right answers provide a DAY's worth of water for a student.

It's a geography game of accuracy with a sliding scale."A perfectly correct answer will result in a donation of 10 cups of water; less accurate will result in 9 cups of water and so on; A completely wrong answer means no cups of water will be donated on your behalf;"

This game tests your knowledge of world geography and world cultures. Each right answer gives a spoonful of flour to end hunger.

Princess Party!

During spring break, the cafeteria was closed. Boyfriend, Sir and I were still on campus, though. Various reasons; I had classes. I think Sir had RA work. Anyway, we were lucky to have friends who invited us into their home so we could have real food. There is only so much you can cook in a microwave. On Friday, March 13, we went over to Mason's fiancee's apartment and make some food. There was edamame, couscous, mashed potatoes, and brownies.

Mason, Fiancee, Roomie, Sir, Boyfriend

Then Kevin and I switched places, so I could be in the picture.

It had just been Mason's Fiancee's birthday and she loves princesses. She wants to be a princess. :-) The decorations were still up and at dinner, we had a long, silly discussion over who would be which Princess. Boyfriend got to go first since it was his birthday (or it would be the next day). He immediately picked Belle. Because she is the best princess. Fiancee, Sir, and I were all disappointed. Sir picked Snow White, because he likes midgets. Roomie picked Cinderella because no one can fill his shoes. Then Fiancee let Mason pick, but he decided that he would choose by process of elimination. So, we picked Ariel for him, because he is a red head. Then we picked Aurora for Fiancee, and Jasmine for me, because she's the only ethnic princess. I wanted to be Mulan, but she wasn't one of the six.

I said that I'd memorize Pi to 30 Digits by Pi day! And so I did. Happy Pi Day!

p.s. I promise that I didn't just throw that in my head and I wasn't reading off anything. I haven't looked at the actual digits since the 13th.

Thursday Thirteen #6

I was going to do: "Thirteen Things I'd Never Say To Your Face" which would be things that I want to say to specific (anonymous) people but I haven't done so and I may never.

But it was making me angry and sad. I don't care if it's cathartic. I don't feel much like doing it. I am doing something I like much better:

Thirteen of Tiwari's "Other" Movies

The last Friday of every month, Dr. Rajive Tiwari (author of Facebook Status as Poetry) shows a independant, usually lesser known film, to students here at Belmont Abbey College, and we discuss it. It is not part of a class. It's just something we enjoy. Each semester there is a theme. Included below are movies from the themes "Religion" "Fathers and Sons" "Home, Sweet Home," among others.

Darjeeling Unlimited

Into Great Silence

Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall... and Spring

Winter Solstice

Sweet Land

In Between Days

Billy Elliot

Abouna

Requiem for a Dream

Pi

Scenes From A Marriage

I Shot Andy Warhol

Frida

A/n: I may update this to include a little blurb: what I thought about each movie. But I don't feel like doing that right now

Out of these films, my favorites were I Shot Andy Warhol and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring.

There are four movies each semester. The next one is March 27th at 7pm in the Belmont Abbey College Science Auditorium. You are welcome to join us. :-)

Wednesday Weirdness #4

WW #46
Questions by: Another Suburban Mom

1. What makes a person sexy to you? So many things determine whether I find someone sexy. Smarts is defintely one of them. I have what I call an "intellectual crush." It's when I think someone is sexy solely based on their intelligence (though they may be very sexy in other ways as well). They must be able to keep up decent, zesty, conversation. What else? Well, a couple vices help. Luscious lips and long legs don't hurt either.

2. When having the 'number of sex partners' talk with a potential significant other, would you be turned off if they had slept with more than a certain number of people? If yes, what is that number? Oh, I don't know! I've never slept with someone who was promiscuous. I suppose it would depend on the relationship. And whether or not they could produce proof of negative test results.

3. Once and for all, pocketbook sized dogs and the people who carry them in pocketbooks. Cute or crazy? Errrmmmm, well the puppies are certainly adorable, and While I would love to have a cuddle wee buddy with me all day, it is a bit silly.

What about kitties in purses?

4. Do you give up anything for Lent? If so, what? I gave up Lent for Lent.

5. If you live with someone, what is the one thing you will never let them see you do? Umm, poo. I'm pretty open. But, I won't let them watch me poo I guess. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

TMI Tuesday #3

1. Are you pro-marriage? Why or why not? I agree with marriage and I think it's a wonderful thing. But I realize that people change and grow and they may grow apart. So, maybe it's not for everyone.

2. Have you ever invented or thought you invented a sexual position? Haha, no! I'm not so creative!

3. Do you like to be tied up? Always or sometimes? I have been before and it was very fun. I wouldn't like it every time though.

4. Do you consider online cybering adultery? If your partner doesn't want you doing it, then it's adultery. I'm going to use the same arguement I use for swinging. It's not cheating when everyone is consenting. If your partner thinks that cybersex is adultery, then yes, it is. If they don't, then go ahead!

5. Do you prefer masturbation over real sex? I once heard that the orgasm was the loneliest experience. If that is so, then masturbation is double lonely. However, I feel that the word lonely can be replaced with the word "selfish." And we're all a little selfish sometimes. So, sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. But, I think that "real sex" is better than masturbation, all the time.

6. Do you want sex more times a day than your partner? That would be a "no." I definitely have a low sex drive.

7. Do you get offended when you partner openly flirts with others or are you okay with it? He's not really flirty. He's very shy. I'd actually be very surprised to see him flirting with someone else!

8. Do you think you're flirty by nature? Meet Mary Heuser, GTCHS Class of 2002 Class Flirt! That's right! Some people are "Most Likely to Succeed" or what not. My superlative was "Class Flirt". I'm just a wee bit flirty. I've toned it down since high school. My partner does not appreciate open flirtation with other people.

Facebook Status as Poetry

Students of psychology and language are currently engaged in a debate regarding the impact of social network media on linguistic changes. One camp holds that the ever increasing use of texting is having a deleterious effect on syntax and spelling. This, according to the denizens of this camp, is diminishing the written expression of our youth. On the other side are those that see the constant engagement with messaging as a positive development that is expanding the writing experience in ways that lead to creative usage and enriched self-expression.

All aspects of living languages have always evolved in accordance with other changes taking place in society at large. In fact it is exactly this flexibility and adaptive power that makes a language thrive. Language cannot help but reflect cultural changes. In fact technology-induced changes in language have a long history that can be traced as far back as the introduction of the written word. The use of stones, leaves, parchments, scrolls, paper, printing press, and broadcast media have all engendered changes in language. Each of these new technologies brought about a level of standardization of language that was unprecedented. And standardization of language inevitably alters the range of linguistic expression embodied in dialects spoken previously by a smaller number of people. The universality of standard language devours the local expression. It can be argued that it is an impulse against this destruction which gives rise to various forms of slang. And thus the tension between standardization and independent expression keeps the language rich and fertile.

Technological changes affect not only the language of common use but can also give rise to new literary forms. It is impossible, for example, to imagine the rise of the novel in an era that preceded the mass reproduction made possible by the printing press. The time may be ripe now for the latest technologies of social networking to open up new possibilities in the written expression.

It is plausible to think of the Facebook Status as a new genre of poetry. All literary forms operate under certain constraints. It is precisely these constraints that define the form and make it worth paying attention to. The writing of a Status requires a haiku-like economy of words. The poem has to begin with the words, “(poet’s first name) is” (as Tim reminded me). This format offers restrictions that can be used in creative ways for a unique way of expressing oneself.

The poem is consumed by its audience within seconds of its completion. This adds a sense of immediacy to its tone. The temporal closeness between the writer and the reader that the Status affords presents exceptional interpretive insights.

Features that are unique to using a keyboard or keypad can be exploited for adding depth to a work. For instance, the transposing of letters when spelling a word, whether intentional or not, adds a certain sense of urgency and even desperation to the poem. The word “the” written as “teh” takes on new meanings that do not exist in the original spelling. It is thus possible to develop literary devices that characterize this electronic literary form.

The Facebook Status is up for a week after which it is automatically archived on the page as simply a glimpse of the past. The poem is thereby decentered on the page and becomes a part of Facebook memory. This is reminiscent of Buddhist monks who spend days creating a work of art, often on the ground with colored powders, and then proceed to demolish it. The act is meant to draw attention to the ephemeral nature of beauty or in fact anything that one values. The Facebook Status is short-lived and yet can be accessed at any time as a past. It lives on the brink of destruction and yet is engraved forever in the memory of the machine.

The space occupied by the Status in the memory appears as layers of biographic glimpses when one scrolls down a Facebook. Scrolling down is akin to an archaeological dig in which what came before and after helps understand the object of study. The structure of the Facebook then provides an array of events, thoughts and encounters in which the poem can be read for contextual meaning.

A Facebook Status as poetry then has unique possibilities for creating, circulating, reading and interpreting. Let me end by citing my own work as an example of Facebook poetry. This was my Status on the day of Obama’s presidential inauguration which was also the day of first snow of the season in Charlotte.

My Art file.

I have two separate folder on my computer for stuff that I find on the internet.

One is a "funny pictures" folder, which is your standard, "I gotta save this picture," folder.

The other is titled, "art." I put things in this folder which I want to keep, but just don't feel right in my "funny pictures" folder. The pictures may be funny, thought provoking, or just something that I can connect with.

I find that when I'm bored, sad, or in some emotionally stressing moment, I can open that folder and find something to help out.

I enjoy browsing this folder, so I thought I would share with you some of the pictures that it contains.

No spring break for moi

Ahh, well I should be doing school work. But I think I'll take a break. I've felt like blogging all day.

I have my last midterm/final tonight at 6 pm. I say "midterm/final" because I'm in some 15 week courses and some 7 week courses. For the four classes I am currently taking (2 full semester, 2 half semester) I only have one midterm, but two finals. I pick up two new half-semester classes on Tuesday of next week.

Let me break down my day for you:
Mon-Thurs
9 -10 am: wake up, shower, check email etc
11-12 pm: Work Study, grade tests
12-1 pm: sometimes lunch, sometimes hanging out in the psych department
MW1-3 pm: Class! (History of Psychology and Data Utilization)
TH1-3 pm: more Work study!
3-5 pm: Studying somewhere on campus. Probably the science building
5-6 pm: I may continue studying or I may go to dinner
6-8 pm: Class! (Social Psychology or Research Methods)
8-10 pm: Hanging out with Boyfriend/Roomie/Sir/etc
10-1 am: Studying or more hanging out... it varies

On Friday, the schedule is the same as MW until 2pm: then I am off and it is all hanging out. No studying!

So, like my schedule says: it's Wednesday at 4, so I am studying. I've written an essay on whether aggression is a natural tendency or a learned behavior. Next I have to write an essay on whether we are architects or products of our social world. Then, I have to write an essay about what I got out of Social Psychology (this is optional, but I'm doing it anyway).

Then...

Then...

(after I take my test... that's what the essays are for)

No more class!!! Until Tuesday that is. Well, I have one class on Friday, but it's not much. But, it's okay. I'm more excited about the lack of tests than the lack of classes. I actually LIKE most my classes. But it will be nice to be able to relax.

Anyway, the school has decided to starve the people who have to stay over Spring Break. And, I don't have the choice of going home, since I have night classes during spring break. They've closed the cafeteria. So, everyone should give me money. So I can buy food!

Noms plz!

Plumy/Fushia Hair

At least, I called it a Plumy-fushia when I first dyed it. It's faded a bit. And when I talk about my hair color fading, it's usually not a bad thing. For these funky colors, it seems like every week someone asks me if I did something new. "Nope, I just washed my hair a couple times."

Anyway, for your viewing pleasure: The Camwhoring of Mary
